Book & Bottle: Carménère & The Alchemist

Mar 12 | Wine Pairings, Book Club

One of my favorite reading pairings recently was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho alongside a glass of Sierra Batuco’s 2018 Reserva Carménère. Both the wine and the book start subtly, but open up with depth and surprises—perfect companions for a thoughtful evening.

First Impressions: Cover & Color

The Alchemist’s cover (25th Anniversary edition) is bright and minimal—much like the deep purple hue of the Carménère in your glass. Both appear simple at first, but offer complexity the deeper you dive. The book sets us on a classic hero’s journey; the wine sets us up for bold flavor. Neither should be judged by appearances alone.

On the Nose: Fragrance & Foreshadowing

Early in the book, we're introduced to the idea of a “Personal Legend”—our destiny, and the omens that guide us to it. Similarly, Carménère opens with soft but distinct notes of blackberry and raspberry. Let it breathe, and you’ll find smokey undertones rising—mystery, signs, and story all in a glass.

Maktub,” the novel says. It is written. Just like this wine’s character—it was always meant to be savored slowly.

Some Honest Notes

This pairing isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for a fast-paced thriller or a fruit bomb of a wine, this combo might feel too gentle. Both book and bottle ask you to slow down. Reflect. Explore. If that’s your vibe, you’re in for something special.

The Personal Legend of Carménère

Here’s the fun twist—Carménère was nearly lost to history. Originally from Bordeaux, it was mistaken for Merlot and transplanted to Chile. Forgotten for over a century, it was rediscovered in 1994 and reintroduced to the world—almost like the shepherd’s journey to rediscover himself. Wild, right?

It’s not what enters men’s mouths that’s evil,” the alchemist tells us. “It’s what comes out of their mouths that is.
— The Alchemist

Final Thoughts

Both The Alchemist and this glass of Carménère share a theme: trust the journey. Whether it’s a grape finding its way back into the spotlight or a boy chasing omens across the desert, both stories remind us to listen—to signs, to flavor, to our hearts.

So light a candle, pour a glass, and dive into a story that lingers long after the final page—or the final sip.
